Special Education and
Rehabilitation Counseling Programs

Three Options for Graduate-level Certification
in Learning and Behavior Disorders (P-12)

The Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling at the University of Kentucky offers Learning and Behavior Disorders (LBD) certification and extensions at the graduate level. Depending on professional backgrounds, students first apply to Graduate School for one of the following non-degree categories: (a) Fifth Year Certification, or (b) Rank I. An application for graduate studies in the Department also is required. Both applications may be obtained by contacting the departmental office at 859-257-4713. After enrolling in or completing EDS 600, Survey of Special Education, students must apply to the Teacher Education Program (TEP).

The LBD Certification Program features continuous assessment of students, beginning with the TEP application. The entry-level assessment requires students to: (a) meet the requirements for TEP admission, (b) be enrolled in or complete EDS 600, (c) articulate orally and in writing a personal philosophy of teaching and describe experiences with students with disabilities, (d) prepare an acceptable extemporaneous writing sample, and (d) interview with representatives of the LBD Program Faculty. Once admitted to the TEP, students are continuously monitored; this includes analysis of the cumulative portfolio, course grades, and performance in field experiences. A mid-point assessment occurs at the conclusion of EDS 589, Field Experience with Students with Mild Disabilities. The exit assessment takes place when all courses in the student’s program plan are completed. In addition, students must earn passing scores on the required PRAXIS exams.

Graduate-level certification and extension programs in Learning and Behavior Disorders (LBD) were revised in the fall of 2002 and now feature fewer required courses than the previous programs. The three versions of LBD certification programs at the graduate level are designed for individuals who (a) hold Elementary or Middle School certification for general education, (b) hold Secondary certification for general education, or (c) have no general education certification. Course requirements for each version of the program are listed below. All courses are 3 semester hours unless otherwise noted. Additional information about program requirements appears after the course lists.
