The Graduate Program in Rehabilitation Counseling Rehabilitation Counseling is a self-contained, interdisciplinary program within the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling at the University of Kentucky leading to a Master of Rehabilitation Counseling degree. This unique setting allows for flexibility in tailoring each student's curriculum to meet individual needs and interests. The program trains students to understand the physical, psychological, social, cultural and economic needs of individuals with disabilities in terms of vocational adjustment. Rehabilitation Counseling combines a humanitarian concern for the individual with a business and management philosophy of effective utilization of human resources. |

The Rehabilitation Counseling Profession Rehabilitation Counseling is a challenging and expanding profession. The rehabilitation counselor provides and coordinates services to persons with mental, physical, and learning disabilities which interfere with productive functioning and independent living. The rehabilitation counselor must demonstrate competencies in establishing counseling relationships, assessment procedures, vocational placement, program planning and coordination and have an awareness of professional and community resources that can be utilized in the rehabilitation process. Emphasis is placed on severe disability and its consequences, and independent living. Graduates of the program are employed in a wide range of public and private rehabilitation settings including state agencies, rehabilitation facilities, hospitals, and private businesses. Program Accreditation The Graduate Program in Rehabilitation Counseling is accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education, and approved by the Kentucky Council on Higher Education. The Curriculum Curriculum construction enables students to complete their program either in a full-time, four semester (sixteen months including summer courses) sequence, or through part-time study. All courses necessary for graduation are offered during the late afternoon and evening on a rotating basis. Coursework is integrated with extensive field work, totaling a minimum of 55-57 credit hours, or 48 credit hours for students with undergraduate degrees in rehabilitation education. The curriculum is composed of three levels of courses or areas: Basic Core, Advanced Core, and Support Areas. As an interdisciplinary program, required courses are taught by the four-person rehabilitation faculty. Other required and elective courses are offered by Special Education, Educational and Counseling Psychology, Social Work, and other disciplines. Students are encouraged to select their electives to form a "support area" enhancing their skills and knowledge on one theme. Support areas available through interdisciplinary planning include: learning disabilities, business administration, substance abuse, gerontology, mental health, administration and management, family studies, advanced counseling techniques, policy and planning, and hearing and visual impairment. Cooperating disciplines include Educational and Counseling Psychology, Behavioral Sciences, Social Work, Special Education, Sociology, Public Administration, Family Studies, Psychology, Allied Health, and Business Administration.
