Rehabilitation Counseling

UK Masters Program in Rehabilitation Counseling Opportunities for Kentucky State University Students:

In partnership with Kentucky State University (KSU), the UK Graduate Program in Rehabilitation Counseling maintains two programs to assist KSU students interested in exploring or entering a career in Rehabilitation Counseling: The University Scholars Program and the Endorsement Curriculum.

University Scholars Program

In partnership with Kentucky State University, the UK Rehabilitation Counseling program has developed the University Scholars Program. The University Scholars program is an effort to recruit KSU undergraduate students entering their senior year. Students who meet the eligibility requirements and enter the program will be jointly considered KSU undergraduates and UK graduate students. Students take 12 credits in the Rehabilitation Counseling Program during their senior year, and upon graduation enter the UK Rehabilitation Counseling Program and complete their education toward the Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling.

Endorsement Curriculum:

Established in 1997, the Endorsement Curriculum in Rehabilitation Counseling (ECRC) is a collaboration among the University of Kentucky, Kentucky State University, the Kentucky Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, and the Kentucky Department of the Blind. This collaboration is intended to serve as a catalyst for communication, human resource development, and relationship building among rehabilitation professionals, consumers, and educators. The goal of the Endorsement Curriculum is to provide educational and employment opportunities to students entering the field of rehabilitation counseling.

The Endorsement Curriculum is open to all KSU students. It should appeal to junior and senior human service majors (social work, criminal justice, psychology, family studies, and nursing). It should also appeal to graduates, returning students, and non-traditional students. Students who complete the ECRC are eligible to enter the UK master's degree program in Rehabilitation Counseling. Students may request a waiver to complete the program with only 45-48 credit hours needed to graduate.

Admission Procedure:

Students do not have to apply for admission to the ECRC. Once students have been admitted to KSU, they are eligible to take courses in the ECRC. Upon successful completion of this Endorsement Curriculum, a certificate will be issued by the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling at the University of Kentucky.

Course Requirements:

The certificate in the Endorsement Curriculum requires 12 hours of course work:

.RC 510: Orientation to Rehabilitation Resources (3 credits)
.RC 515: Medical and Psychosocial Aspects of Disabilities I (3 credits)
.RC 516: Medical and Psychosocial Aspects of Disabilities II (3 credits)
.RC 520: Principles of Rehabilitation (3 credits)

At KSU, instruction is provided through traditional classes as well as through compressed video. Students will take two courses in the fall semester and two courses in the spring semester to complete the required 12 credit hours. The ECRC can be completed in one academic year. Courses are cross listed in the KSU registration schedule.
