UK College of Education Research Notes

October, 2005 By Lars G. Björk, Director

Research Notes is a monthly publication of the Institute for Educational Research that highlights grant announcements, proposals submitted and received by faculty in the College of Education as well as their collaborative research activities with other Colleges. Information included in Research Notes is derived from Internal Approval Forms (IAF) routinely submitted to OSPA through the College Grants Office. To ensure that Research Notes accurately reflects all College of Education faculty research activities, it is essential that Faith Cordray has a copy of IAF on file faith.cordray@uky.edu.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The College of Education will fund several internal proposals aimed at the development of specific interdisciplinary research proposals. The Institute for Educational Research (IER) will convene a panel of College of Education faculty to review these proposals.

Requirements:

  • Proposals funded by the College of Education must lead to submission of a grant proposal to an external funding agency. A copy of the proposal must be submitted to the office of the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in lieu of a final report.
  • Proposals that utilize an interdisciplinary perspective and which include diverse groups of faculty either from within the College of Education or from outside of the College will be given preference.
  • Funds must be spent by June 30, 2006 , unless special arrangements are made with the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies.
  • The College of Education must be designated as the primary sponsor of the grant; if funded, the grant will be centrally managed at IER, with a portion of indirect cost funds supporting the
management work at IER. The grant should be administered by the Institute for Education Research, in 105 Taylor Education.
  • Budgets must be detailed, and may include any justifiable expenses except travel to conferences or travel to meet with funding agencies. These expenses may be covered by Departments, the Associate Dean's Office, and the office of the Vice President for Research.

Procedure:

  • Proposals should include the following information:
    • Name of Principal Investigator (this person will be responsible for submission of the final proposal)
    • Names and affiliations of Co-Investigators
    • Identification of either a specific RFA or several possible competitions to which the proposal will be submitted (including proposal deadline)
    • A one-page prospectus, describing the work that will be supported by the grant.
    • A detailed budget, not to exceed $8,000 Proposals should be submitted to Laura Harris, 105 Taylor Education Building, by Friday, January 6 th, 2006 .
  • Human subjects (IRB) approval is required for any pilot data collection.

In-Kind Support:

The College of Education will provide the following additional in-kind support for the development of these proposals; these services do not need to be included in budget proposals:

  • The College Grants Office will assist with budget development for final grant proposals.
  • The IER will provide RA services for assistance with literature searches and other tasks associated with proposal preparation.
  • The IER will provide secretarial assistance as needed.
  • Additional funds will be available on a case-by-case basis for travel to meet with funding agencies or program officers.
