M.S. Curriculum

The Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion offers a M.S. degree with a specialization in Teaching, Coaching and Sport Leadership. All students choosing this program tract must complete the following 4 core classes:

Required Core Courses:

Any graduate Statistics class (usually EDP 570, EPE 570 or STA 570) (3)
KHP 546 - Instructional Effectiveness in Kinesiology and Health Promotion (3)
KHP 580 - Introduction to Team Development (3)
KHP 644 - Research Methods in Kinesiology and Health Promotion (3)

The following are examples of possible elective courses listed by interest area. Courses are not limited to those listed, but all courses are selected in consultation with an advisor.

Beyond the 4 core classes, students may choose to specialize in teaching, coaching or sport leadership. While there are some courses that apply to each of the areas, there certainly are differences as well. The following are examples of possible elective courses listed by interest area. Courses are not limited to those listed, but all courses are selected in consultation with an advisor. Even though possible electives are listed for each separate emphasis, it can be permissible to take electives from any of the three areas of emphasis listed below. For example, a student may be interested in the teaching emphasis but may wish to choose some electives from the Coaching or Sport Leadership Emphases. Design of the program MUST be done in conjunction with the advisor.

TEACHING EMPHASIS

This emphasis is for students who have an interest in teaching as a profession and want advanced work in this area. When the student completes a planned program in conjunction with an advisor, he/she can achieve Rank II or Rank I.

COACHING EMPHASIS

This emphasis is for persons who are interested in coaching any sport at any level or for current coaches to develop specific knowledge about coaching.

SPORT LEADERSHIP EMPHASIS

The Sport Leadership emphasis within the Coaching, Teaching and Sport Leadership option is designed to enhance leadership and administrative skills for those who work in a variety of sport settings. This program will benefit professionals who work in areas such as athletic administration (scholastic and collegiate), coaching, community and youth sports, recreation (commercial and municipal), exercise science, and wellness/health promotion. While this emphasis allows for opportunities to take coursework in business, its primary focus is on training leaders, supervisors and administrators who recognize the need for a wide variety of skills.
