Chester Coleman Travelstead of Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a native of Franklin, Kentucky. He retired in 1977 as provost of the University of New Mexico, where he also had served as dean of the College of Education and vice president for academic affairs.

Travelstead earned his bachelor's degree from Western Kentucky University, his master's degree from Northwestern University, and his doctorate in education from UK. He has served as dean of the colleges of education at the University of Georgia, the University of South Carolina, and the University of New Mexico. From 1965 to 1966, Travelstead was chair of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.


Dr. Travelstead passed away on December 27, 2006
