COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

The College of Education faculty and staff donated more than $250 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research as a result of its participation in Denim Day on Oct. 8, 2004.

 

DEPARTMENTS

The UK Dance Program hosted the 5th grade classes from Cannonsburg Elementary, Ashland, KY on September 29, for a creative dance workshop at the Barker Hall Dance Studio. Students from KHP 390 and selected members from the UK Dance Ensemble were group leaders in the Dance Lesson on the Concepts of Force, taught by Rayma K. Beal.

The Department of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation sponsored a colloquium on October 11 featuring the former president of Oberlin College, Frederick Starr. Starr is currently rector pro tem of the University of Central Asia. His talk was entitled, “The University of Central Asia: Creating a new university dedicated to the mountain peoples of Kyrgyztan, Tajikstan, and Kazakhstan.”  

 

FACULTY 

Tom Guskey Thomas R. Guskey, Department of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation, presented a Distinguished Lecture at Harvard University this fall. His lecture was part of a series of talks sponsored by the Hope Foundation on the theme of Courageous Leadership for School Success. In addition, Professor Guskey traveled to Japan and Vietnam to present at special conferences sponsored by the East Asian Council for Overseas Schools. He also published chapters in the International Handbook on the Continuing Professional Development of Teachers and Teacher Education Yearbook XI, and articles in the Journal of Staff Development, Phi Delta Kappan, and Principal Leadership. 
John Thelin John R. Thelin, University Research Professor and member of the College of Education's Educational Policy Studies department faculty, was keynote speaker for the University of Georgia's Institute of Higher Education 40th anniversary forum on September 10th. Thelin also was a featured speaker on "Trends in Higher Education" at the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education's annual conference for board members, trustees and presidents on September 19th.
Tricia Browne-Ferrigno

Tricia Browne-Ferrigno, Educational Administration and Supervision, made a paper presentation, Meeting the learning needs of students: A rural high-need school districts systemic leadership development initiative, at the annual meeting of the National Rural Education Association in Indianapolis. She also published four articles in three different publications: Educational Administration Quarterly, Education Leadership Review, and two articles in the Twelfth Annual Yearbook of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration.

The US Department of Education increased funding to the Principals Excellence Program (PEP) last month. The PEP program, a collaborative research program led by Tricia Browne-Ferrigno, project director and associate professor with the Department of Administration and Supervision, and the Pike County School System, develops school leaders for service to rural communities. Total funding of the program exceeded half a million dollars from October 1, 2002 to September 30, 2005. 

Elinor Brown Elinor Brown, Curriculum and Instruction, published a significant research article, "What precipitates change in cultural diversity awareness during a multicultural course: The message or the method?” in the September/October issue of the Journal of Teacher Education (JTE). JTE is the official journal of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE).
Jody Clasey The Kentucky Fund for Healthy Living, Inc. made a $150,000 endowment gift to the Pediatric Exercise Physiology Laboratory (PEP-Lab) at the University of Kentucky College of Education. Jody Clasey, Co-Director of the PEP-Lab and associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion, accepted the gift. It will be used to maintain staff and expand the PEP-Lab’s services.
Doug Jones The Kentucky Council of Teachers of Mathematics presented UK College of Education faculty member Doug Jones with a Mathematics Education Service Award. The award recognizes outstanding work in the area of expertise and service to the mathematics community. The award will be presented at the annual meeting of the Kentucky Council of Teachers of Mathematics (KCTM). During the KCTM annual conference, Jones will deliver one a presentation entitled “Big Rocks: Teachers Meeting the Challenge” which addresses professional development of beginning teachers.

Doug Jones made a presentation at the Mid-Atlantic conference for the Association for the Education of Teachers of Science on October 15 – 16th. The topic: “Big Rocks: Teachers Setting the Standard” addressed the development of coherence among teachers.

Jim Rinehart
Lars Bjork
Jim Rinehart, chair of the Department of Administration and Supervision, and Lars Bjork, Director of the College of Education’s Institute for Education Research, will both be traveling to China at the end of October to present research at the 2004 Commonwealth Council for Educational Administration and Management Regional Conference (CCEAM). Their first presentations will be made in Hong Kong on Friday, October 22. Four days later in Shanghai, Rinehart will be a participant in a plenary session and Bjork will make a paper presentation during the afternoon on teacher leadership. CCEAM is an international organization linking professionals who manage educational institutions or do research in educational administration.


STUDENTS

Carla Crane Mahan, Educational and Counseling Psychology Ph.D. Candidate, is one of two individuals that have recently been appointed by Commissioner Wear of Kentucky’s Department for Mental Health and Mental Retardation Services, as a Program Evaluation and Research Specialist within the Departments Division of Administration and Financial Management. The positions are new within the Department and will collectively focus on department-wide program evaluation efforts, applied research activities, and best practice implementation.

 

ALUMNI

College of Education alumni Trudy Banta, BA’63 Education, MA’65, and Dermontti Dawson, BA’88 Education have been named as 2005 inductees into the University of Kentucky Hall of Distinguished Alumni.

Trudy Banta is Professor of Higher Education and Vice Chancellor for Planning and Institutional Improvement at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. She is recognized nationally and internationally as an authority on assessment and as an author, researcher, and organizer of conferences on assessment.

Dermontti Dawson is an inductee to the UK College of Education Hall of Fame, the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame and was named the College of Education's Philanthropists of the Year. In recognition of his work with children, his Pittsburgh Steeler teammates unanimously named him the recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award. Dawson is well known for his athletic ability. He was an all-state athlete at Bryan Station High School and a highly regarded lineman for the University of Kentucky Wildcats. He participated in seven consecutive pro bowls and was one of the great centers in NFL history.
