College of Education to be collection point for Books for Children |
|
From now until December 8th, the Books for Children program is accepting donations of new books for children from infancy through 12-years-old. The Books for Children charitable committee accepts cash donations as well. The purpose of this community program is to promote literacy and a love for reading through the ownership of books. "We want to get books into the hands of all children," said Karen Sandberg, Director of the community Books for Children drive. Books are requested by several community agencies that serve children in Fayette and Jessamine County. The agencies then distribute the books to children or through a variety of literacy programs. Some organizations that have benefited are The Nest, Nathaniel Mission, Head Start, Step By Step, Hispanic Center, Grace Coleman Center, Early Learning Village, and Family Resource Centers affiliated with Fayette County Schools. The UK College of Education has been a community partner for the Books for Children drive for the last five years. While contributions of books from the University of Kentucky have declined over the past two years, UK has been noted for its ethnically diverse book donations. From UK has come many Spanish language children's books as well as books that feature a diverse group of characters, Organizers hope that this year UK can increase the level of contributions as well as maintaining its diversity. Collection boxes are located in the Taylor Education Building and Dickey Hall at the following areas:
