State Senator observes Kentucky Reading Project classroom | |
Sen. Thayer visited Anne Mason Elementary School to talk about his job as a legislator as part of the America’s Legislators Back to School program. That program encouraged elected officials to meet with schoolchildren in their district and answer questions, share ideas, listen to concerns, and impart a greater understanding of the legislative process. In addition to his presentation, however, Thayer also visited the primary grade classroom of Ruthie Adams to observe her techniques for teaching literacy. Adams is a participant in the KRP, a statewide professional development program in literacy education administered by the Collaborative Center for Literacy Development (CCLD). The UK College of Education provides headquarters for the CCLD. Adams led the class in an interactive reading and writing activity, a strategy she learned in KRP during a two-week summer institute held at one of the eight state universities across the commonwealth. In subsequent follow-up sessions, teachers focus on the components of a comprehensive literacy approach, using research-based strategies. KRP directors, who are state university literacy faculty, provide the instruction assisted by Reading First State Coaches from the Kentucky Department of Education. |
