The Kentucky Education Association’s Student Program (KEA-SP) within the UK College of Education is sponsoring the annual Books for Children holiday season drive.

From now until December 8th, Books for Children is accepting donations of new books for children from infancy through 12-years-old. The organization accepts cash donations as well.

UK’s participation distinguishes itself for its contributions of ethnically diverse book donations.

“In addition to several classic children’s books, UK is always reliable for providing Spanish-language children’s books as well as books designed for children with special needs. We hope that UK will continue that tradition and also increase the amount of books it has donated,” commented Annie Starnes, President of the KEA-SP.

The ultimate goal of this community program is to promote literacy and a love for reading through the ownership of books.

Several community agencies that serve children in Fayette and Jessamine counties distribute the donated books through a variety of literacy programs. Organizations that distribute new books include: The Nest, Nathaniel Mission, Head Start, Step By Step, Hispanic Center, Grace Coleman Center, Early Learning Village, and Family Resource Centers affiliated with Fayette County Schools.

The KEA-SP placed collection boxes in the following areas:
• 133 Dickey Hall: The Office of Advancement
• 104 Taylor Education Building
• 100 Seaton Center: The office of the Kinesiology and Health Promotion department.
