UK College of Education Rehabilitation Counseling Program Ranks 6th Internationally

By Josh Shepherd

A leading journal in the rehabilitation field published a study recently that ranks the UK Rehabilitation Counseling program 6th out of 901 international institutions for publication productivity. The program is part of the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling.

Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin, considered the premiere journal in the field, conducted and published this peer reviewed study in its fall 2005 edition. Ralph Crystal, Wallace Charles Hill Professor in Rehabilitation Counseling at the University of Kentucky, commented that the ranking is meaningful because of its basis on an objective measure – the quantity of published research professors make annually in the six core Rehabilitation Counseling journals.

“Although the study ranks institutions based on the quantity of articles published in the six core journals, one can infer a qualitative measure from the results. The journals are peer-reviewed and the editors select articles for publication based on the quality of their content,” Crystal argued.

In addition to Crystal, the UK Rehabilitation Counseling faculty includes Professors Sonja Feist-Price, Debra Harley, and Associate Professor Malachy Bishop. The program also has two part time instructors: Kathy Sheppard-Jones and Jackie Rogers.

The study published two ratings lists. The first list, which rated UK eighth overall, simply tracking the college affiliation of the authors of every article in the six journals. All authors received equal credit regardless of their position in the published article.

The second list weighted the authorship of each article. The study gave higher credit to those listed as first author than those listed in second or third position. It was from this list that UK achieved its 6th place rating.

According to the study, 901 institutions in 15 nations were included in the analysis. The surveyors reviewed over 1,000 journal articles.

“The results of this review clearly demonstrate that our faculty and students are making significant contributions to the body of new knowledge in Rehabilitation Counseling,” Crystal said.
