The UK Alumni Association presented Torch of Excellence and Torch Bearer awards as part of the 15th annual Lyman T. Johnson African-American Alumni Awards Banquet on Oct. 28 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Lexington. A College of Education faculty member, student, and alumnus received awards that evening.

The theme for this year’s banquet was "Upholding the Torch of Excellence." The event featured Boyce Watkins, who received two undergraduate degrees and a master's degree from UK. He is an author and professor of finance at Syracuse University.

Each college or department selected an African-American student as its 2005 Torch Bearer Award and a member of its alumni for a Torch of Excellence Award.

Tesha is a secondary social studies education major and plans to enroll in the Master’s with Initial Certification program. She is a recipient of three academic scholarships, including the William C. Parker and Grace Coleman Scholarships. Her activities include membership in the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the Minority Educators’ Association. Tesha also volunteers at Kid’s Avenue Child Development Center and the Youth Service Center at Crawford Middle School in Lexington.

Dermontti, along with his wife Regina, established an academic scholarship at the UK College of Education that has provided numerous students the financial means to earn their degree and pursue careers as professional educators. Dawson is a member of three different alumni halls of fame including the College of Education, UK Athletics, and the UK Alumni Association Hall of Distinguished Alumni. In 2005, Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher appointed Dawson to the UK Board of Trustees.

Athletics recognized Parker for his accomplishments as a UK student and former football player, and also for the scope of his influence as a teacher and coach. Before his appointment to the UK faculty, Parker was head coach of the Bryan Station High School varsity football program. Under his leadership, the team produced three NFL athletes including fellow Lyman Johnson banquet honoree Dermontti Dawson. Parker also earned academic recognition for his doctoral work. His dissertation earned Phi Delta Kappa’s “Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award” in 1996. The Kentucky High School Athletics Association inducted Parker into its hall of fame in 2003.
