Thelin reveals Lexington’s “town and gown” history with local universities | |
The historic “town and gown” relationship linking Lexington, Transylvania University, and the University of Kentucky was the subject of a special presentation by UK College of Education professor John Thelin on Thursday, March 31, at 6:30pm. The presentation, which also featured an exhibit displaying the rich economic and cultural heritage behind this relationship, was held in the Niles Gallery of the Lucille Little Fine Arts Library on the UK campus. “Kentucky is home to a large number of colleges and universities. Their contribution and impact on local communities are substantial, but their legends and lore as part of the civic life and local history are under-appreciated,” Thelin stated. "There are many examples where 'town and gown' relationships impart a rich historic tradition, one in which Kentucky should be justly proud," Thelin said. Exhibits showing significant events in Kentucky’s town and gown heritage and memorabilia specific to the contributions of colleges accompany Thelin’s lecture. "Town and gown" lectures will also be held at Lindsey Wilson College on April 21st and at Centre College on May 4th. For additional information, e-mail Professor Thelin at jthelin@uky.edu.
