2005 walk sets record for attendance and money raised

Student organizations at the College of Education and throughout UK led the annual Walk Against Child Abuse to its most successful fund-raising drive yet for the Center for Women, Children, and Families (CWCF).

In terms of both numbers of participants and dollars raised, the annual Walk hosted by the college set new benchmarks. Nearly 200 participants gathered outside the Bernard “Skeeter” Johnson Student Activities Center and over $1800 were raised in support of the Center.

Organizers were satisfied with the results of the Walk, but feel that the changes made to the event this year – most notably relocating the center of activities to the Johnson Center – had a positive impact on the event’s success. They were in hopes that the records set this year for the Walk Against Child Abuse would be shattered in years to come.

Numerous volunteers, students, student organizations and community members joined Lexington Mayor Teresa Isaac, College of Education Dean James G. Cibulka, and CWCF Director Eileen O’Malley in expressing a deeply held wish to end incidences of family and child abuse in Fayette County and throughout Kentucky.

“We must heal the family before we can stop the abuse,” said O’Malley and she ended her talk with a plea. “I would love it if tomorrow there was no longer a need for my job or for the Center. It is possible to end abuse. Please help put me out of a job.”
