UK dance students received an introduction and demonstration of Chinese folk dance in February. This unique opportunity came courtesy of a visit from students of the Heilongjiang School of Performing Arts of Harbin, China.

Students from the school toured the Kentucky area during the celebration of Chinese New Year, giving performances at UK, Eastern Kentucky University, Owensboro, and at the Lexington Children’s Theater. The UK Asia Center sponsored the school’s Kentucky tour as well as the visit to the dance class.

Academy director Cai Jinzheng gave UK students a brief introduction about the history and culture of the Heilongjiang province as well as a description of the dancer’s training at the academy.

UK students were then treated to several dance demonstrations under the direction of dance professor Qiao Liang. The dances highlighted the artistry and athleticism of Chinese folk dancing. The program concluded with UK students breaking into groups and learning traditional dance movements while working with Chinese props.
