The American Educational Research Association (AERA) presented Thomas R. Guskey, professor in the UK Department of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation, with one of their major awards during the organization’s annual conference in San Francisco.

Guskey accepted the Relating Research to Practice Award, one of AERA’s most prestigious, which recognizes outstanding contributions individuals have made toward increasing practitioner and lay-group understanding of how education research can improve education practice.

Guskey was one of eleven outstanding scholars honored at the AERA Awards presentation on April 9 at the Moscone Center.

Through involvement with educators in school districts, regional service centers, state education agencies, and members of the National Staff Development Council, Guskey has established a strong relationship between education research and practice. His work on teacher change and professional development has helped staff development leaders throughout the United States and in several foreign countries recognize the relationship between education research, improved practice, and student learning.

Other to receive awards were:

  • Stephen W. Raudenbush, of the University of Chicago, with AERA’s Distinguished Contributions to Research in Education Award.
  • H.D. Hoover of the University of Iowa was presented the E. F. Lindquist Award.
  • Andrew W. Mellon Foundation President William G. Bowen and co-authors Martin A. Kurzweil and Eugene M. Tobin were presented AERA’s Outstanding Book Award for their book, Equity and Excellence in American Higher Education.
  • Gwendolyn C. Baker, AERA’s first Director of Social Justice, the Social Justice in Education Award.
