In recognition of her leadership as former director of the Collaborative Center for Literacy Development (CCLD), Nawanna Privett, ‘68, ‘76, was presented the Friend of Literacy award at the second annual Kentucky Literacy Research Symposium held in Spindletop Hall.

Janice Almasi, The Carol Lee Robertson Endowed Professor of Literacy at the UK College of Education, presented the award to Ms. Privett just prior to the Symposium’s first research presentation.

Privett was director of the CCLD during a critical phase of the organization’s development. She was one of the educational leaders responsible for establishing the collaborative relationship among the state’s eight universities and the National Center for Family Literacy. Professionally, Nawanna Privett’s career has touched on nearly every facet of education. She has been a student, a teacher, administrator, and director, a planner, advisor, leader, and partner.

Accepting the award, Privett praised Almasi and CCLD director Susan Cantrell for moving the state’s literacy agenda forward. The large attendance of Kentucky educators and leaders at the second state Literacy Symposium is proof, she said, that CCLD’s vision is becoming a reality.

The Kentucky Literacy Symposium brings the foremost thinkers and investigators in the field of literacy research to Kentucky to address issues of national, state, and local importance. Topics, issues, and speakers for the 2006 Kentucky Literacy Research Symposium were determined by surveying literacy professionals and administrators across the Commonwealth. Issues addressed at the symposium this year included Adolescent Literacy, Closing the Achievement Gap, and Comprehension.
