Eric Brooks, president of the Historical Confederation of Kentucky, presents the award to John Thelin.

University of Kentucky College of Education professor John R. Thelin was honored at the 2006 Kentucky History Awards Program, held March 4 at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History.

Sponsored by the Kentucky Historical Society and the Historical Confederation of Kentucky, the annual awards recognize the best history achievements and projects relating to state and local history. Thelin received the Certification of Commendation for an Educational Program for the Public for his 2004 lecture series about Kentucky's "Town and Gown" heritage, delving into the role college campuses have played in the economic, intellectual, and cultural development of Kentucky’s college towns. It has been too long a neglected area of historic study, Thelin said. A grant from the Kentucky Humanities Council supported the series.

This is an opportunity to recognize the hard work of those who cherish Kentucky history, said Kent Whitworth, executive director of the Clark center. We are pleased to honor individuals and programs that provide all of us with connections to the past, perspective on the present, and inspiration for the future.

General award categories included educational program for schools, educational program for community, volunteer group, museum exhibit, family history publication, local or state history publication, brochure or pamphlet, and poster, exhibit catalog or other publication.
