Sharon Brennan, associate professor of curriculum and instruction and director of field experience and school collaboration for the UK College of Education, co-edited a book entitled Intercultural Student Teaching: A Bridge to Global Competence. The book, which focuses on the development and implementation of successful international student teaching programs, is slated to hit the shelves in April 2007. “This book specifically targets faculty and program administrators at schools that currently have international programs or want to develop them,” said Brennan. But it is also a great resources for students, as well as partner schools. Brennan came to the University of Kentucky College of Education in 1981 and has served as the director of field experience for teacher education students at the UK College of Education since 1984 . She co-edited the book with Kenneth Cushner, a professor at the Kent State University College of Education and the executive director of international affairs. When asked about the inspiration behind this book, Brennan shared that she and Cushner simply wanted to encourage universities to develop international and intercultural programs for their teacher candidates. “An Intercultural experience is a vital part of learning to teach,” said Brennan. “So we want other schools to understand how these opportunities allow teachers to broaden their world view and then use those experiences to inform their teaching.” Brennan received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the State College of Framington, Framington, Mass., and both her master’s and doctorates in education from the University of Kentucky. More information about the book is available on the R&L Education website at www.rowmaneducation.com or by contacting Brennan at sharon.brennan@uky.edu. |
