UK College of Education Conference to highlight the past, present and
future of education schools

David Labaree,  professor of education and associate dean for student affairs at Stanford University, and Alan Tom, professor emeritus in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, headline an upcoming conference titled “Ed Schools: Perspectives on the Past, Prospects for the Future.”  The conference is hosted by the University of Kentucky College of Education on Friday, May 18, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Lexington, Ky.

The day-long conference will feature lectures by both Labaree and Tom.  Labaree’s lecture titled “An Uneasy Relationship: The Problem of Teacher Education in the University” will begin at 9:00 a.m.  Tom’s lecture titled “Responding to Stakeholders: Which Direction for Teacher Education?” will begin at 1:30 p.m.  Following each lecture, a three-member panel of experts will offer replies and open the floor for question and answer sessions.

Labaree authored “The Making of An American High School” (Yale University Press, 1988), which won awards from the both the History of Education Society and the American Educational Research Association in 1989.  He also wrote “How to Succeed in School Without Really Learning: The Credentials Race in American Education” (Yale University Press, 1997) and “The Trouble with Ed Schools” (Yale University Press, 2004).

Tom’s publications include “Teaching as a Moral Craft” (Longman, 1984), “Redesigning Teacher Education” (SUNY, 1997), which won awards from both the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and the American Educational Studies Association, and “Moral Matters: Making the Moral Visible in American Schooling” (co-authored with Barbara Stengal) which is forthcoming from Teachers College Press.

The panelists for the conference include: James Klotter, professor and chair of the Department of History at Georgetown College and Kentucky State Historian; John Thelin, professor of educational policy studies and evaluation at the UK College of Education; Gene Bottoms, senior vice president of the Southern Regional Educational Board; Robert Sexton, executive director of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence; Lu Young, superintendent of Jessamine County schools; and Jon Draud, associate professor of education and director of School/University Partnerships for Northern Kentucky University.

The conference is free and includes lunch and a reception.
