Annual Spring Walk Against Child Abuse held Saturday, April 7th

The annual Spring Walk Against Child Abuse, sponsored by the UK College of Education Student Advisory Council, was held this year at the Taylor Education Building Saturday, April 7th from 10am - 12pm.

The Spring Walk, celebrating its sixth year, raised $865 in support of The Center for Women, Children and Families, a non-profit social service agency located on North Limestone in Lexington. The center provides much needed support services to Lexington area families.

Contributions and support of the center funds many programs. The following are a few of their services:

  • The Nest: providing free, temporary care to children from families unable to afford commercial day care services. Its services also provide a safe environment for children while parents are on job interviews, receiving counseling, or starting a new job.

  • Family WorkAbility: a training program for women with children who are making the transition from welfare to work. This program helps working mothers manage life responsibilities such as arranging childcare and transportation while working.

  • Counseling Services and Workshops for adults and children dealing with crises in childhood trauma, crime victimization, and other life issues.

The Spring Walk Against Child Abuse sponsors a short route, approximately 1-mile, and a long route, 2-mile, walk around the UK campus beginning at the Taylor Education Building near the intersection of Upper and Limestone streets.

Approximately 75 people were involved in the walk this year including staff and faculty from the college, several campus sororities, academic organizations, and even some local Lexington industries such as Adessa and Link Belt. The SAC would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Lucian Taylor for donating his time and sound system. Dr. Taylor led the walkers gathered in front of Taylor Education in some light stretching exercises just before walk time. In addition, we received coverage from WKYT and WDKY television.

All in all, the program improved from last year and achieved modest success. Hopefully, next year, the event will get even bigger and we will be even more successful.

Dean Raines and Wayne Harvey present Donna Peden, Development Director for the Center for Women, Children, and Families, a check for $865. This money was raised by the annual Walk Against Child Abuse.
