UK College of Education Thelin named a UK Great Teacher

John Thelin

John Thelin, University Research Professor and a member of the Educational Policy Studies faculty, earned a 2004 Great Teacher Award from The University of Kentucky Alumni Association. Thelin was one of six recipients among the UK faculty. The award was presented on February 26.

Since 1961, the Alumni Association has recognized UK professors for outstanding teaching by honoring them with a plaque and a $2,000 cash award at an annual recognition luncheon. This university tradition is the oldest, continuously given award for teachers at UK and has honored nearly 200 teachers.

Recipients are selected by a committee which includes nine members of the UK Alumni Association’s Board of Directors and one representative from the student organizations Mortar Board and Omicron Delta Kappa. All nominations for the Great Teacher Award are submitted by students.

Besides Dr. Thelin, other 2004 winners included Chana Akins, associate professor of psychology, College of Arts and Sciences; George C. Herring, alumni professor of history, College of Arts and Sciences; Kevin R. Hopper, assistant professor of biology, Lexington Community College; Brian R. MacPherson, the Holsinger Endowed professor of anatomy, College of Medicine; and John Yannelli, associate professor of medicine, College of Medicine, who also holds a joint appointment in the College of Pharmacy.

“The UK Alumni Association is honored to present such exceptional and admirable educators with the Great Teacher Award,” said UK Alumni Association director Stan Key. “These recipients leave a life-long impression and influence on a student’s life, not only as a professor, but also as a role model.”
