Students represent the College of Education at American Heart Walk

College of Education students and faculty gathered at the Nutter Center on Sunday, February 11th to participate in the annual American Heart Walk. Together they raised approximately $230 for the American Heart Association.

The college added twenty people to the hundreds participating in this year's walk. In addition to colleges and university organizations, several health care organizations were present at the event representing the UK Medical Center, St. Joseph's Hospital, and Good Samaritan. Employees from Lexington industries such as Link Belt threw their support into the walk as well. In addition to the walk, the event featured a health fair, children's activities, and appearances by the UK Wildcat, the Thorougblades mascot, and the new mascot from the Lexington Legends baseball team.

Proceeds from the walk benefited the American Heart Association, a non-profit organization that supports heart disease research and grass roots efforts to educate people about lowering their risk for heart disease.

The College of Education team was again composed of a coalition of its student organizations; most notably, Epsilon Delta, KHP Club, and the student ambassadors. Members included Sarah Lucas, Jessica Moore, Amanda Dickey, Carrie Decker, Kristy Porter, Carol Jo Buchanan, Stephanie Sparks, Candace Ashby, Kelly Coyle, Diana Dillard, John Derek Faulconer, Angela Hamblin, Naah Yemeh, Jo Smith, Kim Ahr, Wayne Harvey, and Josh Shepherd. Faculty contributors also included Sharon Brennan and Deborah Bott Slaton.

The College of Education will continue its mission to be more actively involved in the community when it sponsors its annual Walk Against Child Abuse, scheduled for Saturday, April 7th, from 9am - 12pm. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Center for Women, Children and Families in downtown Lexington. Twenty-seven walkers participated in the walk last year. The College of Education's Coalition of Student Organizations hopes to exceed that number this year. For information, contact Wayne Harvey or Cindi Jefferson at 859-257-3792.
