UK attacks national math and science education gap

National statistics continue to indicate that students in the United States lag behind most countries in math and science achievement.

Given the ever-expanding complexity of the technological and economic landscape facing our children, the University of Kentucky recognizes that achievement in mathematics and science is essential to prepare students for professional success. It is also necessary for the nation to concern itself with educational improvements in those subjects to be in a position of advantage when global economic revival occurs.

In recognition of this imperative, the UK colleges of Education and Arts and Science are collaborating on a five-year research endeavor to improve student achievement in mathematics and science in the Central Appalachian region.

This research is supported by a $20 million grant from the National Science Foundation’s Math and Science Partnership program. The grant is a key facet of President George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind education plan and the first investment in his five-year $1 billion math and science partnership initiative.

Paul Eakin, the project’s principal investigator, said the program seeks to ensure better education in these subject areas through partnerships that unite professional educators in public school districts with college and state university faculty.

As co-principal investigator, Ron Atwood of the UK College of Education leads the science initiatives of the Appalachian Mathematics and Science Partnership (AMSP).The project is intended to strengthen mathematics and science education from headstart classrooms all the way through senior year in college. In addition, the College of Education hopes to better prepare school teachers and those who aspire to be teachers about the most effective means to instruct students in these subjects.

UK, the lead partner in the project, will work with the Appalachian Rural Systemic Initiative (ARSI) and eight institutions of higher education in Kentucky, including Eastern Kentucky University, Kentucky State University, Morehead State University, Pikeville College, Union College, University of Virginia College at Wise, University of Tennessee, and Somerset Community College.

Program to improve school leadership in rural areas

Researchers at the University of Kentucky (UK) College of Education are working with officials from an eastern Kentucky school district to design an advanced leadership development program specifically for service to rural areas. The project’s developers believe that the program has excellent potential to benefit underserved school districts across the United States.

Rural communities have long struggled to attract and retain skilled educational leaders in their schools, said Tricia Browne-Ferrigno, principal investigator and professor at UK. This research project, she said, is an aggressive response to this persistent shortage that ultimately affects the quality of a school’s educational system.

The three-year project will culminate in a model program in advanced leadership development for practicing and non-practicing certified administrators. It will be implemented in the Pike County school district.

The long-term implications of this program’s success are that schools in underserved populations may have access to better educational leadership. These leaders would have insight into the unique needs of rural school districts and would be more likely to serve these schools. That, in turn, will help improve schools and assure better academic success for students in rural districts.
