New Policy: Information Systems Use Policy

on this proposed new policy. (Email will go to Katherine
Adams, Associate General Counsel and Sheila Brothers, Office of the Senate Council.)
Katherine Adams, Associate
General Counsel, brought the proposed policy to the Senate Council on Monday,
December 4, 2006. Below is an explanation of the proposed new policy.
To protect faculty, staff,
students, research activities, etc., there is an urgent need for a practical
policy that tells everyone "be careful when you have this kind of
sensitive information, don't keep it if you don't need it, and protect it while
you have it." The policy does not try to specifically state the security
measures that are required, but for the most part says to check the IT web
pages for current recommendations, since technology changes so quickly.
This draft has been
circulated to a number of IT personnel, hospital, research, and web people;
Legal Counsel wants to ensure input from all sectors and users. After receiving
comments from the University Senate and Staff Senate, the President's Cabinet
will be asked to adopt it as policy, similar to other computer use policies.
