How to Apply
In order to apply for aid at the University of Kentucky, follow the steps below:
- Fill out FASFA Form
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Applying online is the most expedient way to apply for assistance and includes built in "edits" that help filers avoid common mistakes. Paper FAFSA forms are available at your local high school in the guidance counselor's office or in the Financial Aid Office of most colleges. You must complete the application and list the University of Kentucky in Step 6. The University of Kentucky's Title IV code is 001989. - If you will begin UK in January 2010, in addition to the 2009-2010 FAFSA, you MUST complete the Spring 2010 Request for Federal Aid form (PDF).
- If you plan to attend either or both of the 2009 Summer Sessions, in addition to the 08-09 FAFSA, you MUST complete the Summer 2009 Request for Federal Aid form available March 1 (PDF).
- Submit the FAFSA form electronically. If you completed a paper FAFSA form, mail it to the national processor using the envelope provided. Do not send it to the University of Kentucky.
- Receive and review Student Aid Report (SAR)
Approximately 4 weeks after you have submitted the FAFSA to the processor, you will be sent a Student Aid Report (SAR). You should review all of the information in the SAR. If everything is correct, retain the SAR for your records. If information on the SAR is incorrect, follow the instructions on the Student Aid Report (SAR) page. If you are applying after the semester has started, additional paperwork may be required. Please contact the Financial Aid Office.
Understanding the Student Financial Aid Process:
- About 4 weeks after you submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the Processor, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). If you file the form electronically and give an email address, all notifications will be electronic. The SAR contains important information and needs to be carefully reviewed. On the front page, at the top right there will be an entry that looks like EFC: XXXXX
- In the example above XXXXX should be a number. If there is no number, your FAFSA could not be processed due to missing or incomplete information. You must correct the information and mail the SAR back to the processor or make changes electronically.
- In section 2, items appearing in bold type require an answer. You must write in the answer to the right of the question in the space provided and mail the SAR back to the processor. Several messages may appear on the front of the SAR that indicate something is wrong or missing. Listed below are the most common problems and how to fix them.
- You have not registered for selective service
If you are female write "Female" on your SAR next to that message. If you are male and have registered for selective service please submit proof/documentation to the Financial Aid office. If you are a male and have not registered for selective service see instructions following the message. - You have been chosen for verification
If this message appears on your SAR and you expect to enroll at the University of Kentucky, you will receive a verification form from U.K.
- You have not registered for selective service
- If the verification form you received is marked Dependent, you and your parents must complete and sign the form. Submit it to the FAO (Financial Aid Office) along with a signed copy of your and your parents' 2008 Federal Tax Forms (1040). If you used the 1040-TEL form you must sign the form even though there is not a line to sign it. If you do not have your tax forms you may call the IRS (800)829-1040 and request a tax transcript OR Return To Taxpayer Form (RTFTP). If you did not file taxes, you must include a copy of your W-2 forms AND copies of your parents' W-2 Forms.
- If the verification form you received is marked Independent, follow the above instructions with this exception: Submit the information for yourself and your spouse, if married. Your parents' information is not required.
- Your social security number does not match with your name: Ensure that the social security number on the SAR is correct. This message usually appears when a person marries but does not change their name with the Social Security Administration. To correct this error, send a copy of your social security card with your new name and social security number to the Financial Aid Office.
These are just a few common examples of messages on the SAR. If your SAR has a message that you're not sure what to do about, please contact our office.
Summer Sessions
If you will begin UK in May or June and want to apply for aid for one of the Summer sessions, in addition to the 2008-2009 FAFSA, you MUST complete the Summer 2009 Request for Federal Aid form (PDF), which will be available in March 2009.
