Same New Thing

reception:
Thursday, Feb. 19, 5-7:00 pm

Same New Thing brings together three local emerging artists, who consider issues confronting society today in their work: Bobby Campbell, Stephen Dorsett and Lori Larusso. Campbell is an assistant professor of art at Morehead State University. His digital drawings are inspired by his love of legends, comics, and action figures, and influenced by the modern-day ability that one has to continuously re-imagine and re-invent oneself. He imagines us all as possible superheroes, if only we had the necessary upgrades.

Dorsett teaches art at Lexington Catholic High School. Dorsett's paintings feature objects that are typically mass-produced and disposable, now embellished with elaborate decorations and made into something valuable. His work raises questions about materialism and waste in contemporary American society and looks to other cultures throughout history for answers.

Larusso is on the faculty at Eastern Kentucky University. Her artwork questions the influences and demands that society has on an individual. Her work depicts intimate household and backyard scenes of relative comfort, with clues that hint at the instability of the situation. Larusso's newest work focuses on excessive consumption and the sense of entitlement that is the result of an overreaching media.

By referencing slick, commercial packaging with their style of painting, these artists borrow from the language and imagery of mass production and consumption. The imagery in the work is generalized and non-specific, making the work personal and accessible to the average viewer.
