Terry Adkins (MFA 1979) writes ÒIf you google ÔBlack Beethoven AdkinsÕ you will get hits from the Philadelphia Weekly and artblog about my show that is currently running in Philadelphia.Ó [ed.: http://philadelphiaweekly.com/view.php?id=8509] Critic Roberta Fallon writes, ÒThe artist, musician and Penn Fine Arts Department professor, who's known for exploring themes related to African-American heritage, has created a complex enterprise including music and ceremony. It amounts to a reenvisioning of history and a reclaiming of one of the white world's icons, Beethoven, as a brotherÉ Whether the god of Western music was of mixed race or considered such in his lifetime is less important than Adkins' more salient proposition of a people's Beethoven--a genius embraced by all whose art is every bit as beautiful, and deified, as the German guy's.Ó
