Dr. Szekely has published more than one hundred articles in major journals and magazines in the United States and Canada as well as eight books, including Staten Island Architecture and Environment, Encouraging Creativity in Art Lessons, From Play to Art, Video Art in the Classroom, A Retrospective: 1973-2003 Essays for Art Teachers, The Art of Teaching Art (translated into a Chinese edition) and the forthcoming From Home Art to School Art (jointly published by Columbia University and the National Art Education Association). Dr. Szekely contributes a regular column “Children’s Art Diary” for Arts and Activities Magazine.


Dr. Szekely served as Vice President of the National Art Education Association and the President of the Kentucky Art Education Association. He has received the highest award in the field for publication, the Emanuel Barkan Award, and more recently, the Lowenfeld Prize for lifetime achievement. He was named a National Treasure by the National Art Education Association student chapters. He is a sought-after speaker at state, national, and university forums, having delivered forty different invited and keynote lectures.


In addition to his work in art education, Dr. Szekely continues to work as a prolific painter and active filmmaker. He has enjoyed twelve one-person shows in Soho, New York, and his work has been reviewed in Art News, Arts, The New Yorker, The Staten Island Advance, and The Eastside Weekly. He has created television commercials and a full-length documentary about children’s art.
