Art Studio

Overview

Students wishing to major in the studio arts have a choice of two undergraduate degrees. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree is for those who wish to create a broad foundation based on the tradition of the liberal arts, suitable for many different career paths, not just those in the visual arts. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree offers a more specialized curriculum which is especially useful for those students seeking specific careers as professional artists, designers, and for graduate studies.

B.A. in Art Studio

The studio B.A. degree connects the specific study of artistic media to the University’s rich academic environment. Before graduation, students in the B.A. program exhibit their work in a group show in the department’s Barnhart Gallery.

The University’s current Undergraduate Bulletin contains specific requirements for the B.A. in Art Studio and course descriptions.

B.F.A. in Art Studio

The B.F.A. is a pre-professional degree which permits students to specialize in one or more of several areas of study supported by the department. Students are accepted into the B.F.A. program by portfolio examination, a review that takes place after the student has completed the required foundation sequence (usually after the second year of study). This degree program culminates in a solo show, a public exhibition of the student’s artistic accomplishments. Students may choose to specialize in one or more of the following areas:

  • Ceramics
  • New Media
  • Drawing
  • Fiber Arts
  • Painting
  • Photography
  • Printmaking
  • Sculpture

Please check the University’s current Undergraduate Bulletin for specific requirements for the B.F.A. in Art Studio and course descriptions.

Undergraduate Minor

Students may choose to acquire significant skills in artistic practices through a Minor in Art Studio. The Minor requires from 20-21 credit hours of course work, at least nine of which must be in upper-level studio. The University’s current Undergraduate Bulletin lists the specific requirements for the Minor in Art Studio.
