Begun
in 1988, the Arts Administration Program at the University of Kentucky
offers one of the most comprehensive undergraduate curriculums in the
country today. The program averages 80 majors each year,
with an alumni base of about 200. Developed to meet the growing demand
for professionals with both sharp business skills and artistic sensibilities,
this program prepares students for a future in the management of arts
organizations and graduate study.
Arts organizations that have employed graduates in the past include The Kennedy
Center, Guggenheim Museum, Actors Theatre of Louisville, La Jolla Playhouse,
Goodman Theatre, Los Angeles County Museum, Philadelphia Museum, Verve
Records, Chicago Lyric Opera, Kentucky Center for the Arts, Indianapolis
Children's Museum, and the Lexington Philharmonic. Graduates have also
gone on to graduate studies in programs at Columbia University, Columbia College, Florida
State University, American University, University of Cincinnati, University of Wisconsin,University of Kentucky, Harvard and New
York University, as well as others.
The Arts Administration program combines study in the arts and humanities with
concentrations in business and communications. The program provides all
students with a strong undergraduate liberal arts education, a basic understanding
of the business world, and a comprehensive education in one of the three
arts disciplines of art, music and theatre. The program also emphasizes
applying information learned in the classroom to hands-on, relevant work
experiences, including volunteer activities, internships and paid work
both on and off-campus. Advisors and faculty within the Arts Administration
Program are readily available and are committed to establishing a one-on-one
relationship with each student.
