UK Arts Administration Faculty

Michael Braun

Michael BraunMichael Braun is an Associate Professor in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Kentucky. Since 1994, he has also served as the director of the Arts Administration Program, teaching classes in fundraising, marketing, public relations, and non-profit management. He has worked frequently as an arts consultant
for various nonprofit
arts organizations, national arts service organizations, foundations, state arts agencies, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Prior to coming to Kentucky, he spent almost eight years as the Executive Director of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in Baltimore, Maryland. Prior to that, he spent over seven years in Minneapolis, Minnesota on the staff of Arts Midwest and one of its predecessor organizations, the Affiliated State Arts Agencies of the Upper Midwest. He has a B.A. in Theatre and a M.A. in Arts Administration from St. Cloud State University, where he also worked as an advisor to the Atwood Board of Governors, the student organization responsible for much of SCSU's arts programming. His professional theatre credits include work with the Mark Taper Forum, Los Angeles Actors Theatre, and the Minneapolis Children's Theatre. He has also served on the boards of the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies and the Actors Guild of Lexington.

Rachel Shane

Rachel ShaneDr. Rachel Shane is an Assistant Professor of Arts Administration at the University of Kentucky. Prior to joining the UK faculty, Dr. Shane served as Department Head and Professor of Arts Administration at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), where she established the arts administration department and grew it to the fourth largest graduate program at the college. At SCAD, she led the design and creation of three degree programs including one of the only completely online graduate programs in arts administration, a Master of Art degree program on-campus and an undergraduate minor in Arts and Entertainment Management. Dr. Shane is also the co-founder of MasterMinds Agency, a national consulting firm for nonprofit organizations. She also currently serves as a Board Member for the Association of Arts Administration Educators. Dr. Shane co-authored the article, "Deaccessioning: A Policy Perspective," with Chris Burgess from the College of Charleston, which appears in the Journal of Arts Management, Law and Society (fall 2011).

Dr. Shane has served in a variety of capacities as an arts administrator in the field. She was the Managing Director of the Elm Shakespeare Company in New Haven, Connecticut. She also served as the Associate Director of Education at the Delaware Theatre Company and as the Theatre for Young Audiences Tour Director and Theatre Summer Camp Director for the Hippodrome State Theatre in Gainesville, Florida.

Dr. Shane earned a Ph.D. in Cultural Policy and Arts Administration at The Ohio State University. She also earned a Master of Science in Arts Administration from Drexel University, a Bachelor of Science in Theatre from Northern Arizona University, and an A.A. degree from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
