Message from the Dean, Robert Shay
Someone once said that if you put two artists together, you get at least three opinions. Whether or not this is true, let the statement represent the dynamism of the arts. No other discipline so accurately reflects the variety and subtlety of the human experience.
The air here is vibrant with energy and ideas. I feel it in the classrooms of the Fine Arts Building, when I work in my studio at the Reynolds Building, and when I attend a performance at the Singletary Center for the Arts or the Guignol Theatre. The buildings resonate with history.
The College of Fine Arts is stretching its wings as it makes plans to renovate the Reynolds Building studios and as it dreams of further expansion throughout the College to support a student population burgeoning in quantity and quality.
Of course, past successes in both academic and performing arenas determine the growth and direction of any arts institution. Here in the College of Fine Arts, students can expect the best, based on our solid infrastructure of faculty and staff. These professionals not only bring strong skills to their work but also are innovators who constantly seek new ways to improve their methods and share their love of the arts with those in their charge. Our numbers grow yearly; we must be doing something right.
I’m proud to be a part of the UK College of Fine Arts and promise that in my role as dean and as an artist I will continue to encourage the dynamism of the arts at UK. The energy is real. What could be more vital than its resonating hum?
Bob Shay
