How do I sign up to perform in a music ensemble?
If you are not a Music major or minor and you just want to perform in one of our ensembles, we encourage you to audition. Signup sheets are posted beginning the week before classes each semester on the bulletin boards in the hallways on the lower level of the Fine Arts Building.
In general, ensemble auditions are very brief and consist of playing a few scales, performing a short selection of your choice, and sight reading. Each ensemble has its own criteria, so you should check the bulletin boards or contact the faculty in charge of each ensemble if you need details.
When are auditions for fall admission?
See the Auditions Intro page for regular auditon dates. You may also arrange a special audition any time with the faculty in charge of your area.
Is there a separate application form for School of Music admission?
No. Your audition is your application. You will be given a brief audition report form to fill out that you will hand to the faculty at your audition. They will have been provided the information you give us on the Audition Request Form. Graduate students require the submission of other additional materials.
When will I get confirmation of my audition time?
You should hear from us in late December if you register early, or soon after you fill out the Audition Request Form if you register after January 1. You will only get notification by email. Those auditioning in winds, jazz or percussion will hear from the Band Office or the studio faculty. Voice and strings will hear from the Music office.
Unless told otherwise:
- Winds, Jazz, Percussion: Check in at the Band Office, Room 33 on the lower level of the Fine Arts Building. Here is a campus map.
- Voice and Keyboard: Check-in in the lobby of the Singletary Center for the Arts. Here is a campus map.
- Strings: Go directly to the Niles Gallery off the lobby of the Lucille Little Fine Arts Library. Here is a campus map.
Parking on or near the UK campus is always a challenge. Most lots are unregulated on Saturdays, but no matter when you come you should carefully read the restrictions posted at the entrance to any parking lot. You should be prepared to park a block or more from your audition venue. The Singletary Center has a drop-off entrance on Rose Street. For the Fine Arts building, use the lower level entrance on Patterson Drive.
Visitor parking information and maps are available from UK Parking.
I'm coming from out of town. Where should I stay in Lexington?
Please see the Lexington Convention and Visitors Bureau for hotel information
Will there be an accompanist provided?
An accompanist is provided for voice auditions. Most other auditions are performed without accompaniment.
Do I need to bring copies of my music?
You do not need to bring extra copies of your music except for the vocal accompanist.
Will I be able to warm up before my audition?
Practice rooms are available on the second floor (third level) of the Fine Arts Building. Other spaces may be available, but all spaces are limited and available on a first come basis.
How many people will be listening to my audition?
Auditions may be heard by a single instrumental faculty member, or by several faculty in a division, such as voice or keyboard. Auditions are not open to the public -- parents and family will have to wait outside the audition room.
What repertoire should I have prepared?
See specific repertoire requirements for certain programs.
Can I get a campus tour while I'm there?
Information sessions and campus tours should be arranged through the UK Visitors Center. We also try to have student volunteers on audition days to provide campus tours, but that is entirely dependent on volunteer availability. Please ask when you arrive if a tour is available.
When will I know the results of my audition?
You should receive official notification by mail from the School of Music within about two weeks after your audition or soon after all prospective students in your area of specialty have been heard. Regular auditions are normally completed by the first Saturday in March.
When will I know if I will be offered a Music scholarship?
Probably not as soon as you'd like. You will most likely hear from us about your acceptance into the School of Music before you hear about scholarships. Scholarships are competitive, so we need to have heard all prospective students before making final decisions. Also, some programs are slower than others in getting this information to our business office, which is required before we can send official notification. If you need to expedite this process, please contact the faculty in charge of your area.
