Information for Prospective Undergraduate Students

How to Apply

ALL entering students intending to enroll at UK as an UNDERGRADUATE Music Major or Minor MUST perform an admissions audition for the School of Music. There are no exceptions for undergraduates.

You must be accepted BOTH to the University, through the normal UK Admissions process, AND to the School of Music, by registering for and passing an audition, in order to take classes and participate as a Music major or minor.

Admission to the University of Kentucky

• A prospective student must be admitted to the University of Kentucky through UK's Office of Admissions. Please address questions about admission to the University of Kentucky to the UK Admissions office.
• When you select your major in your UK Admissions Application, you will be listed as "Pre-Music" pending the results of your audition. You will not be allowed to take courses intended for music majors or minors until you have passed your Music admissions audition.*
• International students should see the International Admission Information page. Please address questions about international admission to the University of Kentucky to the UK Admissions office.

* Following a failed audition, rare exceptions may be made, on the sole discretion of faculty, to allow you to take Music classes pending a re-audition after one semester (called "conditional acceptance"). You would continue to be classified as pre-music until you have successfully passed a second audition. If you should fail a second audition, you would most likely not be allowed to continue studies towards a Music degree. You should not count on or request conditional acceptance.

Admission to the UK School of Music

• A prospective student must also be admitted to the School of Music based on prior musical experience and an audition to determine the student's preparation for music study. The audition is REQUIRED of all entering undergraduate students.
• If you should fail your audition, or otherwise decide not to be a Music major or minor, you must contact UK Admissions to change your major to either Undergraduate Studies (UNUS) or another major of your choosing.

Apply early to UK

If at all possible, prospective students should apply to UK prior to auditioning for admission to the School of Music. It is best for students to apply for UK admission prior to February 1 to ensure most favorable considerations.
