Week 1
Basic Skills in Music Technology: Notation, Sequencing, Electronic Instruments
(TI:ME 1A)

June 4-8
10:30 am - 5:00 pm

 

The course will cover basic skills in music notation, MIDI sequencing, and electronic keyboards in K-12 education. Participants will explore many ways to incorporate these tools into the curriculum. The course will be taught in a hands-on environment. This course fulfills half of TI:ME Level 1 certification requirement. Maximum of one person per computer station, 20 students maximum with a student/ instructor ratio no higher than 8:1.

PREREQUISITE: This course requires basic facility on a computer, including using a mouse, opening applications, and saving files.

NOTE: TI:ME offers an alternate certification for Level 1 courses, so if you do have experience with the topics in this course, you may be able to "bypass" it and move to Level 2. See the TI:ME web site under Certification for details.

Week 2
Music Notation: Finale
(TI:ME 2A)

June 11-15
10:30 am - 5:00 pm

Participants will learn to use Finale music notation software to print out scores and parts. The course will be taught in a hands-on environment.

The course is designed to train instrumental, choral, and classroom music specialists to use Finale for notating and printing music. Participants will learn how to input music using an electronic keyboard and computer and to print out scores and parts.

Topics will be adjusted to the needs of participants and may include such items as: transposing band and orchestra parts; printing a choral score; music notation problem solving; incorporation of notation examples into word processors; and using notation software with students. Participants will bring examples of music notation to be entered during the course. Maximum number of students is 20.

PREREQUISITE: TI:ME Level One Certification, or completed a minimum of 2 courses in music technology, or comparable experience using music sequencing software with a Macintosh or Windows PC. Ask us if you have any questions.

Week 3
Music Notation: Sibelius
(TI:ME 2A)

June 18-22
10:30 am - 5:00 pm

Participants will learn to use Sibelius music notation software to print out scores and parts. The course will be taught in a hands-on environment.

The course is designed to train instrumental, choral, and classroom music specialists to use Finale for notating and printing music. Participants will learn how to input music using an electronic keyboard and computer and to print out scores and parts.

Academic Credit: 1 or 2 hours

University policy allows up to two credits for the 30 hours of contact time provided each week of workshop time.

A third credit may be earned by completing an independent project as an outgrowth of the hands-on week. (Graduate students register separately for 1 credit hour of MUS 799; undergraduates please contact us separately for instructions.) This project must be completed and submitted by the end of our 8-week summer session (Aug. 2, 2007).
