For Year 2001-2002
Requirements for Music Education Majors seeking Initial State Teaching Certificate
Admission to the Teacher Education Program
- Apply for admission after 60 hours (usually the start of the junior year)
- Keep a GPA of 2.5 or above in order to apply
- Provide proof of passing standardized test scores at time of application.
Scores can be no more than 8 years old.
- ACT -- 21 or above SAT -- 990 or above
- GRE—1200 total of 3 required tests
- Praxis I -- Reading (173 paper, 320 computer); Math (173 paper, 318 computer): Writing (172 paper, 318 computer)
- Pick up application packet at the Teacher Certification Office--166 Taylor Ed. Bldg.
- Study and follow College of Education guidelines and due dates carefully
- Obtain 3 recommendations and transcript(s) showing all college work up to present semester
- Look for invitation for TEP interview issued to students whose folder for admission is complete at the Teacher Certification Office
- Sign up for TEP interview as soon as possible upon completion of
MUS262 or MUS263 and completion of 60 semester hours of coursework
- A TEP Admissions Portfolio must be delivered to the Music TEP Chair one week prior to your interview (see additional guideline)
Retention in TEP
- Apply for student teaching two semesters prior to student teaching
- Pass piano proficiency exam one year prior to student teaching
- Maintain a GPA of 2.5 or above at all times to stay in TEP, all professional education classes and music classes must be at a grade of C or above
- Follow Code of Ethics at all time
- Present your TEP Retention Portfolio (see additional guideline)
Exiting TEP
- Present TEP Exit Portfolio
- Complete student teaching successfully
- Pass Praxis Exams required for KY certification (exams may differ
each year)
- Take Music Concepts and Processes (0111); Music Content and Knowledge (0113)
- and Principles of Learning and Teaching core exam (if applying after Jan. 1, 2002)

- Do teaching internship during the first year of your teaching
