UK Women's Choir Tours Internationally

The University of Kentucky Women’s Choir, conducted by Lori Hetzel, director of UK Women’s Choir and Associate Director of Choral Ensembles, toured Europe the summer 2005. The Women’s Choir was the first choral group from the UK School of Music to tour internationally.

The ensemble traveling to Europe consisted of 50 singers from the present UK Women’s Choir, as well as alumni singers. The group gave five concerts in some of France, Germany and Austria’s most musically interesting cities.

Among the choir’s performances was a 30-minute concert at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on June 20. Another highlight was a formal concert televised live from Amerika Haus in Munich on June 23. Three performances followed in Austria. On June 26, the Women’s Choir sang for mass at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. The last two performances in Salzburg included a concert on June 27 at Mondsee Wedding Church, the site of the Von Trap wedding in “The Sound of Music,” and a concert on June 28 at Mirabell Gardens, another location used in the movie.

The nationally-recognized UK Women’s Choir is an auditioned choir of approximately 100 students from the freshmen class to graduate students. The group has been invited to perform at several prestigious events, including the American Choral Directors Association National Convention and the Southern Division of the Music Educators National Conference, as well as numerous local events.
