Guitar Courses
Private Lessons: Students receive fourteen lessons per semester.
Guitar Ensemble: Meets weekly in duo, trio and quartet settings. More advanced guitarists may work with other instrumentalists such as flute, voice and violin. The guitar performs each semester.
Studio Class: The entire guitar program meets weekly. Students have an opportunity to perform for and critique each other in addition to receiving feedback from Andrew Leonard. Other topics covered include guitar literature and history, creating a career as a musician and how to teach guitar.
Performances: Guitarists have the opportunity to perform in departmental performances and student arranged concerts in addition to their required degree performances. Music performance majors in guitar are required to give sophomore, junior and senior recitals in addition to a jury each semester.
GUEST ARTISTS
During the course of each year, students in the guitar program will have the opportunity to work with and hear guests artists. Guest artists who have recently visited the University of Kentucky include: the Assad Duo, Composer John Anthony Lennon and Grammy Award Winner & National Fingerstyle Champion Doug Smith.
Applying to the University of Kentucky Guitar Program
PLEASE NOTE: In addition to the School of Music Audition Requirements all applicants (undergraduate and graduate) must also apply to the University of Kentucky.
Graduate Students must also take the required entrance exams for their specific degree level. See the Graduate Admissions area of this web site for more information.
Undergraduate Classical Guitar
Auditions: Auditions are held in February and March for fall admission.

Audition Requirements For All Undergraduate Degree options:
Perform: Two pieces from the classical guitar literature that display your ability to interpret classical style music and demonstrate your technical proficiency. The two pieces should be from different eras. For example, Sor and Villa-Lobos or Bach and Giuliani.
In addition: All applicants will be given a sight reading exam and participate in a brief interview.
Graduate Classical Guitar: Masters Degree and Doctor of Musical Arts
Auditions: Auditions are held in February and March for fall admission.

Audition Requirements for Master of Music or Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance:
Perform a twenty minute recital that contains the following:
Bach: 2 movements from a single suite, sonata or partita.
If the selected movements are from a cello or lute suite, one of the movements must be the prelude. If the selected movements are from a violin sonata, or the Prelude, Fugue and Allegro for lute, one movement must be a fugue.A major work of the guitar repertoire such as (but not limited to) a sonata or theme and variations. Suggested composers: Sor, Giuliani, Mertz, Regondi, Ponce, Villa Lobos (3 or more Etudes not preludes), Rodrigo, Turina, Torroba, etc.
The remaining pieces to fill out a 20 minute recital may be selected by the performer.
