Kate Covington completed her doctoral studies at Indiana University with prior study at IU, Georgia Tech, and Agnes Scott College. She has done research in tonal analysis, improvisation, cognition, and aural skills pedagogy. Her research has been published in journals such as Music Theory Spectrum, College Music Symposium, Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, In Theory Only, and Indiana Theory Review.

She has taught at UK since 1980 and has received several teaching awards, including the Chancellor's Award for Teaching. She has served on the board of Examiners for the GRE Revised Music Exam and currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal for Music Theory Pedagogy.

At the University of Kentucky, she is the Director of the Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy. She teaches aural skills, music theory pedagogy, history of theory, counterpoint, and tonal analysis.
