The Rey M. Longyear Dissertation Fellowship
The Rey M. Longyear Dissertation Fellowship
A fellowship for the writing and research of a doctoral dissertation in musicology at the University of Kentucky.
Eligibility:
Applicants must meet the following conditions:
- Be a student in good standing in the Ph.D. program in musicology at the University of Kentucky.
- Have successfully completed the Ph.D. qualifying examinations. Normally, application for this fellowship should be made no more than two full academic years after passing the qualifying examinations.
- Have an approved dissertation proposal. Normally, application for this fellowship should be made in the first or second year of eligibity; later applications will be considered when appropriate. Students whose dissertations are nearly complete (that is, will be done before the end of the fall semester of the fellowship year, will normally not be considered).
- Not have been the recipient of this Fellowship or a University of Kentucky Dissertation Year Fellowship.
Selection Method:
Applicants should notify the Coordinator of the Division of Musicology, in writing, of their desire to be considered for this Fellowship. This notification must be made no later than 15 March.
The Full Members of the Division of Musicology shall serve as the selection committee for this Fellowship. The quality of the applicant’s academic work and dissertation proposal shall be the prime criteria for selection. Other factors may include the student’s rate of progress, with preference going to those moving quickly through the stages of the degree, or the amount of support the student has previously received. If the committee finds that there are no suitable applicants, it may decide not to award a fellowship in any given year; if funds permit, the committee may decide to award more than one fellowship.
Awards shall be announced by April 15.
Conditions:
Recipients are expected to devote full time to the process of research and writing of the dissertation. In the event that a recipient accepts other employment, it shall be at the discretion of the Division of Musicology to remove the fellowship entirely or in proportion to the extent of employment. Recipients who accept other non-service fellowships are expected to resign from the Longyear Fellowship. Recipients may, without penalty, apply for and accept grants that provide reimbursement for specific research expenses.
Amount:
The Fellowship recipient shall be paid an amount equivalent to the stipend for a third year doctoral Graduate Assistantship in the School of Music (for 2007-2008 this is approximately $11,000). The stipend shall be issued in equal monthly payments from September through May.
