Rey M. Longyear Musicology Research and Travel Fund
For the support of research expenses and professional travel by graduate students in musicology at the University of Kentucky.
This fund is designed to support the following activities:
- Ph.D. dissertation or M.A. thesis research
- participation in professional meetings
- preparation of papers, articles, editions, or other publications
Eligible expenses include travel and such items as duplicating of microfilms, copying or purchase of scores or documents, or purchase of research equipment. This fund will not support expenses related to research for class projects or papers.
Eligibility:
Applicants must be students in good standing in the M.A. or Ph.D. programs in musicology at the University of Kentucky.
Application:
- Applicants must submit an application indicating the proposed research or travel and in what way it is valuable or necessary for the student’s academic progress. This application must be made before the proposed activity takes place.
- If the application is for research, the student must document, where relevant, that the materials or subjects will be accessible.
- If the application is for travel to deliver a paper or presentation, a copy of the invitation or program should be included.
- The application must include a detailed budget including an indication of other sources of funding that have been awarded or for which application has been made. Since it will rarely be possible to provide full support through this fund, applicants are expected to seek any and all possible sources of funding, including outside agencies, the Graduate School, the School of Music, and affiliated organizations. In particular, students should first apply to the Graduate School Student Support program when eligible.
- Applications may be made at any time during the academic year.
- A pdf file of the application form is available here; this should be completed, printed, and submitted, with supporting materials to the Coordinator of the Division.
Selection Method:
The Full Members of the faculty of the Division of Musicology shall serve as the selection committee for this fund. Criteria for make awards shall include the academic progress of the applicant, the necessity of the proposed activity to the student’s program, the quality of the application, the benefit to the Division or School of the student’s participation in the activity, and the availability of other funding. The committee shall determine, based on the availability of funds and other criteria, whether to fund a successful application in full or in part.
Conditions:
Payments from this fund will usually be in the form of reimbursement of expenses. All regular University of Kentucky procedures for reimbursement of travel and other expenses must be followed.
