Performing Live in the Virtual Recital Hall in Second Life®
University of KY Island
The UK School of Music is among the very first university music departments to have a permanent facility established in the virtual worlds. We have built an attractive recital hall in which we hope to present live music by our award winning student musicians.
Be a part of history! You can be among the first students at a public university to perform a real live recital in cyberspace.
Because there are substantial technical issues involved, eligibility to perform a recital in the UK School of Music's Virtual Recital Hall in Second Life® is fairly restricted. We want this to happen and we will facilitate your performance in any way we can. Please understand the following requirements before applying for a recital time:
- At this time we are restricting performances to avatars with experience in SL™. Your avatar must be at least 30 days old. You must know how to customize your avatar, dress yourself, use attachments, navigate by LM and TP, fly, walk sit, etc. These are mostly basic skills you should have mastered before leaving Orientation Island when you first sign up for an account in Second Life. You do not have to know how to build, but if you plan to hold an instrument, you should know how to edit the attachment so it is positioned well on your avatar. (We can assist you with that.)
- We can suppy a piano in world. If you require a different virtual instrument and don't already own one, please talk to Dwight Newton. We can recommend an instrument maker or find a loaner. We may even be able to make one for you.
- Time in the Virtual Recital Hall is limited by staff availability and the availability of the streaming server. If an outside streaming server is required, you may have to pay for that (it's only a couple of dollars).
- You should request approval from your facutly director to perform in SL™. We would like you to consider performing simultaneously in real life and in world as part of a regular degree-required recital from the SCFA Recital Hall or some other appropriate facility. This would require fully informed approval by faculty and additional setup requirements for the venue. If the technology interferes substantially with your performance, you should not consider this. If you prefer, we can arrange a separate recital in the virtual world alone. In any case you will need your faculty director to approve your performance.
- While we want to allow maximum freedom for you to express your creativity, the School of Music and the administrators of UKY Island (TASC and the W.T. Young Library) have full authority to disapprove anything you might propose for any reason at all. You may create any kind of avatar you wish, but it should be appropriate for a recital in a university. Your avatar must be fully clothed and inoffensive. You should prepare to have a full dress rehearsal before your scheduled event. Staff has complete authority to disapprove your avatar for any reason, but we will only reject ideas that are clearly offensive or do not reflect well on the University.
