Andrew received his BA in English from Wake Forest University, his MFA in acting from Carnegie Mellon University and the Moscow Art Theatre School, and his PhD in theatre from SEC rival Louisiana State University. He worked for ten years in Los Angeles as a lighting technician on feature films, commercials, and music videos, and he won regional film festival awards for his two shorts, To Each His Own and Gun Nuts, which he produced and directed. While in L.A. Andrew also trained as an actor; he was a member of the theatre companies Venture West Theatre, singular productions, and the Attic Theatre, and he is an inactive member of SAG and AFTRA.

Here at UK, Andrew has directed Summertime, The Tempest, Doubt: A Parable, A Doll’s House, and Seagull for the main stage, and he directed The Belle of Amherst which toured area high schools. Andrew teaches undergraduate courses in acting and voice, and graduate courses in dramatic literature, theatre history, and critical theory.

His research interests include voice theory and pedagogy, dramatic literature and critical theory, and Chinese theatre and performance. Andrew regularly presents papers at theatre conferences and is a member of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, American Society for Theatre Research, and the Association of Asian Performance. Andrew is the author of Dramatic Theories of Voice in the Twentieth Century (Cambria Press, 2011) and his articles and reviews may be found in The Drama Review, Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism, Text and Presentation, Theatre Symposium, and the Voice and Speech Review, among other journals.

In the summer of 2007, Andrew served as dramaturge for the Shanghai and Beijing tour of The Heidi Chronicles, which was produced by Swine Palace in Baton Rouge, LA.
