General Education Reform
Co-curricular Team
Shortly before the December holiday break, I received the final report on the "Making A Difference II Conference" held this past spring. The report could not have crossed my desk at a more propitious time. At its December 8 meeting, the University Senate voted to take a major step forward in establishing a new general education curriculum by adopting the four learning outcomes as proposed by the General Education Reform Steering Committee.
In addition to the curricular components of the proposed program, there are related and important elements of undergraduate education that comprise what I shall call the co-curriculum of general education. I believe that four of the recommendations contained in final report of the "Making A Difference II" conference capture the flavor of a general education co-curricular agenda:
- Assist new students in making a successful transition to UK; identifying with being a "UK student" first; and making campus connections.
- Promote student success and retention through academic community.
- Integrate major and career exploration into curriculum.
- Promote engagement in campus, city, state, nation, world.
These goals speak directly to the work we perform not only in the classroom but also (and significantly so) beyond the classroom. That said, I want to be sure that in this next round of general education reform we address both the curricular and co-curricular elements of a revised general education program. Therefore, in addition to the ten faculty curricular teams that Senate Council Chair David Randall and I recently appointed, I am creating an eleventh team focused on the co-curricular experience of general education.
The members of the co-curricular team, working closely with their campus constituencies, will be asked to identify the ways in which the co-curricular agenda at UK will need to be rearticulated, and likely redirected, to ensure its close alignment with the recently adopted learning outcomes of a revised general education curriculum. The team has been given a March 15th deadline to report on its preliminary recommendations.
