The use of human subjects in research at UCSF falls under the jurisdiction of federal regulations (45 CFR 46 and 21 CFR 50 and 56). UCSF investigators are granted the privilege of using human subjects under the terms of a formal assurance to the government that research conducted at UCSF complies with these regulations protecting human subjects. All projects involving human subjects, regardless of the site of activity or the funding source, or whether or not there is any funding, that are conducted by UCSF faculty must be reviewed and approved by the Committee on Human Research (CHR), which is the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for UCSF. All participants who conduct or support research involving human subjects must be aware of applicable regulations, policies, and standards of professional conduct and practice.
