Administration Designates January 2, 2009
and December 24, 2008 as Special Holidays
December 9, 2008 – President Lee T. Todd Jr. today announced the University of Kentucky will provide Jan. 2, 2009, as paid holiday time for eligible faculty and staff. This day will be in addition to the Dec. 24, 2008, special holiday. UK Chandler Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital employees will adhere to their respective holiday schedules and thus are not eligible for either holiday. The non-recurring addition of these days to existing "special holidays" means most UK employees this year will enjoy time off from Dec. 24, 2008 through Jan. 4, 2009. The University returns to a regular operating schedule on Monday, Jan. 5, of the new year.
Please note the following:
- An employee in a regular position with a full-time equivalent (FTE) of 0.5 or greater is entitled to regular pay on a holiday/bonus day.
- An employee who is in an unpaid status on a scheduled day immediately before or after a holiday shall not be paid for the holiday.
- An employee on authorized vacation leave shall not be charged vacation leave for a holiday that occurs while the employee is on vacation leave.
- A department with special scheduling and staffing needs may schedule the bonus days at the department’s convenience, as close to the bonus days as possible, and preferably within six weeks, but no more than 12 weeks.
- Only employees who are employed prior to the cut-off date established by the President shall be eligible for the special holidays/bonus days with pay. For the purposes of the December 2008 holidays/bonus days, the cutoff date is November 23.
