Volunteers Needed for K Week
[Message below was originally sent by President Lee T. Todd, Jr. on August 9, 2010]
K Week, the fall welcome week for new students, is one of the most exciting weeks of the year at the University of Kentucky. Hundreds of us are directly involved in the planning and execution of K Week, but hundreds more volunteers are needed. A complete schedule of events can be found at www.uky.edu/KWeek, and faculty and staff are invited to participate in all K Week events. There are many opportunities to meet and greet our new students. I encourage you to participate in one or more of our welcoming events, which are scheduled from early morning to late night.
Help with Student Move-In
Many faculty, staff, and administrators choose to assist with move-in. It is a great opportunity meet and greet the new students and their families as you help unload belongings. To volunteer for a 3 - 4 hour shift during move-in, send an email with your contact information to UKMoveIn@email.uky.edu. Another unique way to participate in the move-in experience is to partner with UK Dining Services and assist with the service of complimentary hot dogs and keeping the ice bins filled with bottled water. Serving others is a great way to show your support for our new students and their families. Volunteers are needed between 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. To sign up for a one or two hour commitment, contact DeWitt King at dwking1@uky.edu or Parker Edwards at pedward@uky.edu.
Parent and Families Reception
An informal Parent and Families Reception, scheduled on Friday, Aug. 20 from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. at the Boone Center, enables families of new students to meet faculty, staff, administrators, veteran UK students, and UK Parent Advisory Council members. The Office of New Student and Parent Programs needs volunteers who can greet guests and answer any questions the families may have. To volunteer for the Parent and Families Reception, please send an email with your contact information to parents@lsv.uky.edu.
New Student Induction
On Saturday, Aug. 21 from 4 - 5 p.m. we invite all faculty to participate in the New Student Induction Ceremony. This opening convocation closely mirrors Commencement and establishes a tone of academic excellence for our new students. If you would like to participate in the faculty procession at this event, please email KWeek@lsv.uky.edu.
UK FUSION
One of the largest community service projects in Kentucky - UK For Unity and Service in Our Neighborhoods (UK FUSION) - is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 23. Last year, over 1,450 students, faculty and staff participated in UK FUSION, completed volunteer projects for 91 agencies, and contributed nearly 6,000 hours toward the betterment of our Lexington neighbors. I challenge the university community to make the eighth annual UK FUSION bigger and better than ever before. Many more faculty/staff members are needed to assist in leading a group of students in the completion of a service project. For more information, visit www.ukfusion.org, then volunteer by e-mailing fusion@uky.edu.
We Are UK
We Are UK, which celebrates the uniqueness of the UK community, will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 24, from 5 - 8 p.m. for all students, faculty, and staff. This outdoor festival behind Memorial Hall will include a variety of free food from Kentucky and from around the world. You'll also see live performances ranging from hip hop to country, poetry to debate, and other various talents from UK students and staff. The We Are UK planning committee is looking for students, faculty, and staff to take part in the live performances. Both individual performers and groups are welcome, and any type of talent will be considered. They are looking for musicians, poets, dancers, comedians, storytellers, orators, jugglers, artists, and more! If you are interested in participating, email KWeek@lsv.uky.edu.
Let us all work together to get the fall semester off to a great start.
