Monthly Message from the Work-Life Director
April Greetings from the Director
Happy Earth Day!
What can we do to contribute to the sustainability of the world or at least leave the world in an environmentally better place than when we were growing up? As noted in the paper, ICT and Sustainability*, it is often in places of work and in the way that we work that the human impact on the environment is often at its greatest and most destructive of nonrenewable resources, species and habitats. As employees at work and as inhabitants of this planet, we have choices to make that can positively influence our future.
We must consider the way we work, the places we work, how we get to work, as well as the products we generate. For example, are you moving towards a “paperless” work environment to cut down on the use of renewable resources? Do you conserve the use of energy in your office, using natural light, moderate heat and air? Are you carpooling, walking, biking to work or telecommuting to reduce your carbon footprint? Or are you taking advantage of the local produce made available through our College of Agriculture Community Support Agriculture Project or weekly trips to the Farmers Market sponsored by Health and Wellness?
The Work Life Office introduces several new features to our web site, linking to what others on campus are doing to promote sustainability. This month we ask you to consider the environmental bottom line, adding it to your quality of life index here and at home.
See you at the market,
Robynn Pease, Director
