Pet Care Monthly Message
May, 2009
May brings two very important events for animal lovers. The first is National Be Kind to Animals Week, held May 3-9, 2009. This event, celebrated since 1915, is sponsored by the American Humane Associationand celebrates the unique bond between animals and people. American Humane offers suggestions on ways to be kind to animals all year as well as during this special week. If you haven’t heard of the American Humane Association, take a few minutes this month to visit their website and learn about the wonderful things they do. American Humane was founded in 1877 and is “the only national organization dedicated to protecting both children and animals.”
National Dog Bite Prevention Week is also held this month. May 17-23 has been designated Dog Bite Prevention awareness week. This event was first created through a congressional resolution and is now sponsored by the American Veterinary Medical Association. The focus of this week is to encourage implementation of effective dog bite injury prevention programs and responsible dog ownership. The AVMA and HSUS offer suggestions on how to do both of these as well as how to behave around animals. If you didn’t read last month’s column on Spring pet safety, visit the Pet Care Archives and learn what you can do to make Spring safe for your pet.
Be kind to animals,
